Amerco Real Estate/U-Haul Construction is pursuing its first LEED certification at the U-Haul Center of the 5th Ward. The U-Haul Center is pursuing LEED for Commercial Interiors Certification.
Sustainable Building Solution is working with Amerco Real Estate / U-Haul Construction as a LEED Consultant providing services to establish the goals, facilitate the collection of documentation, and submission for USGBC LEED Certification.
This project has been submitted to the USGBC for the LEED Commercial Interior Silver Certification. The project utilizes an existing industrial warehouse built in the early 1930’s and located in Milwaukee’s 5th Ward. This area has garnered recent attention as it was included in the city’s Near South Side Comprehensive Plan that aimed to stimulate re-growth and mixed-use development. Over the years, this building previously housed sheet metal and furnace shop, auto repair garage, a foundry casting storage facility and now is used as a moving and self storage facility.
Our project’s scope encompasses a 3,371 square foot area used as a retail showroom. The space is located within an existing heavy steel frame structure enclosed by double wide brick walls and a wood roof. The primary goal for the team was to reuse and recycle as much material as feasible while also installing as many new sustainable design features as possible. These new elements included efficient lighting with day lighting controls and occupancy sensors, as well as a high efficiency HVAC system used in conjunction with a newly constructed thermal envelope to help reduce energy consumption. Similarly, water consumption was reduced by installing low flow fixtures.
